Kings of Leon: "Bigger Than We Wanted to Be"

Wednesday night, Kings of Leon cemented their rock-god status, nabbing four Grammy nominations for "Use Somebody," the chart-storming ballad off 2008's Only by the Night, the record that finally rocketed the Tennessee quartet to international superstardom.

But while massive success often comes with accolades, it also has its pitfalls, and the constant exposure for Night hits like "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody" had Kings frontman Caleb Followill second-guessing his band's path to the limelight.

"We definitely got bigger than we wanted to be," Caleb tells SPIN. "You feel like you've done something wrong. That woman in mom jeans who'd never let me date her daughter? She likes my music. That's fucking not cool. You almost start doing damage control: When people ask you to do stuff, you're like, 'No, because I can already tell this record is going to get to a level where people will fucking hate us.'"

While the band might not have anticipated reaching such commercial heights -- their first three albums each moved a moderately successful 200,000 copies in the U.S., despite adoration by European audiences -- one major rock icon knew it was about to happen.

"Ed [Vedder of Pearl Jam] actually called it immediately," Followill says. "He was one of the first people to hear Only by the Night, and he said, 'You're about to ride a big wave.' I don't even think he liked the record. But he knew immediately that we were about to go through something big."

Read more more of our interview with Caleb and his bandmates in SPIN's January/February issue (on stands December 22). Until then, take a sneak peek at this shot from his SPIN photo shoot!

Really? Caleb..KOL... Of all of the bands I have listened to throughout my life, you are the best band. Seriously. There isnt a track I do not enjoy listening to. It really depends on what mood I am in. Sometimes I can sit ther and press next to a random KOL song and I enjoy it. My point is DO NOT GIVE A HOOT about what people say or what critics say. If you were a good band, down to the roots, you would forget the feedback and almost freestyle with your voices and instruments to create another album thats only you guys. Original. Thats the only way to describe your band. You guys are a part of the music industry already, big time, why not continue to prevail in the same manner as youth and young manhood. Just because you're getting big and somewhat aged, doesnt mean it's bad. Cheese gets better with age. U2 tried to do what you have done, but they dont have what you guys have. Nathan, Jared, Matthew( saw you in milwaukee up close u threw a pick at me and I missed it ) and Caleb, please dont give up. Like I said, as a fan of a long time, It would be wise to come out with an album that YOU create. This is becacause most people think you have sold out and you arent making what you guys really could produce. Sit down near the river, maybe fish and drink some as I do in wisconsin, and think of something.

All I can say is...don't screw a pig in the ass and expect your dick not to smell of ****. You can't choose your fans. If you make radio friendly anthems you will get a wider audience - comes with the territory. Likewise, bands spend years building their popularity. And for what? For little douchebag elitists to whine about how "big" and "uncool" their getting? Ridiculous. "All these new fans.."..boo-friggin-hoo to you. EVERY band is in it for popularity and a paycheck at the end of the day, no matter how small. Artistic integrity my ass - the world is driven by $$$. Bet Caleb wasn't thinking about "getting big too soon" when he was buying his new mansion and sports car.

All of you should shut the **** up. You can't blame them for not wanting all the douchebags to like their music. I went to their concert and I heard all the "bros" wearing there Ed Hardy and Affliction tees, saying " Man I really can't wait to hear use somebody" I mean come on, Whenever their music turns mainstream, and it's put in a different light. So where the lady in the "mom jeans" is even listening, it's not special anymore, it's just mainstream bull****. I don't want to hear all of you complaining who probably only listen to their Only by the night album, judge Kings of Leon, when you haven't even taken the time to listen to their older ****. Grow up, and stop switching radio stations for you're music scene.

I'm 51 years old. I can tell you're 26. You want me to drag this old ass to a concert and see KOL perform "Trani" - which I absolutely love - just to be able to call myself a fan? You're an idiot. If everyone's as ignorant and bigoted as you, it's no wonder we can't have world peace.

What an asshole. bigger than they wanted to be? they should be thankful that people appreciate their music--not go around criticizing different people for listening to their music and making them famous! I find this interview absolutely ridiculous, and I have lost all respect for this band.

I love Adam Lambert. But you're right. However I'm not the one to be talking. I heard Sex on Fire a little bit earlier before it became popular and fell in love. I got all their other music and loved it even more. Knocked Up is on of the greatest songs ever. I hope you can understand that people like me, new fans that love their old stuff should be counted as real fans too.

There's an old agage that says "don't bite the hand that feeds you." I wrote an article about this in music blog called Project: Abandon...Popular Bands. http://radiopotato.com/random-thoughts/project-abandon-popular-bands/

I loved Kings of Leon 2 albums ago and granted, this latest album is truly a masterpiece. Now that the world is catching on, though - I think it's kinda BS for KOL to say they didn't want that to happen. C'mon. Just accept it, adapt, and enjoy your 5-star free hotels and the world's adoration.

It's all good Anthony, I went to the KOL show to see Glasvegas and didn't know KOL's music and thought they weren't that great because the only song I'd ever heard was "use somebody" which is an OK song but, you know. Anyway I saw Glasvegas who were great and then KOL came on and oh my God I had no idea how good they were. I was literally dying, I had floor seats and was right in front. I can not get enough of this band, they are all amazing and they are definitely a band and not just the lead. That being said his voice gets inside your body and it's not a bad thing...I am a mom and so what I know good music when I hear it and this is one good band

I'd like to hold your little hand if I could be so bold!! - Ahem back to the point, as a long term KOL lover (and Matt fan, I ain't gay though) i'd like to say that anyones opinion is welcome but only mine counts. KOL have been expanding there musical style and progressing if you will and have done so to the point where they wrote a cheesy and slightly annoying poppy type song. This reached the masses because it had the words "Your sex is on Fire" in it. Lots of people starting liking them and calling themselves fans, though upon further questioning only know two songs. Fair enough if they get into their old stuff, that's good, but if they think that liking a couple of songs from their (in my opinion least good) newest album is being a fan they can tear of their balls and swallow their own cum. Being a fan and liking songs from a band are completely different. I preferred it when they weren't as well known and didn't have a ****ty album called "Only By The Night". People are so annoying these days. Choi

In response to the comments made by Anonymous. You missed my point. If Only By The Night got you interested in seeking out KOL's older material and you actually enjoy it, then that is awesome....welcome to the party!
Unfortunately you are in the minority. Most of the "new" fans that have been showing up at their shows are there to hear two songs and could care less about hearing such classics as Spiral Staircase, The Bucket or Tranni. This is the reason why KOL's real fans are annoyed. We hate having to share our band with these souless clones.

the man speaks the truth. the new fans aren't fans at all, just people who are riding the mainstream bandwagon.

i saw kol for the first time in lexington this tour, after waiting for the longest time. the show was fantastic, and the boys were on top form, but the crowd was pathetic. you could tell who the long time fans were. the people that thrashed to songs like four kicks and molly's chambers were the real fans. there were only a hand full of people in the first few rows that could sing ALL the words. true fans deserve to be closest to the stage, fueling the band, and that just wasn't totally the case in this instance. there were actually people in the front row who looked BORED.

but when they played sex on fire or use somebody? the whole place erupted. that angered me to no end. caleb and matthew exchanged this very weird look during those songs- it was half happy and half aghast. sure, it's great to have thousands of people know your songs, but at what price? when two songs completely overshadow a strong back catalogue, it is an issue. the public are eating them up for the wrong reasons, and personally, i think they're better off with the pre-obtn fame.

As a 'new fan', I'm completely sick of you 'old fans' complaining. I hadn't even heard of them prior to this album. And guess what, I went out and bought all of their albums because I loved their sound and wanted to hear more. So, I DO know the song fans. And I was pleasantly surprised to hear the growth in their albums from YYMH to OBTN. It was great. And I can't wait for more.

I completely agree. I am a huge KOL fan, and it just irks me when people think they can call themselves "fans" when the only two tracks they know are "Use Somebody" and "Sex on Fire". Don't get me wrong, I love all of KOL's songs, old and new. But people just need to get out there and hear their old stuff. It's absolutely amazing. I'm hoping they have some songs on their 2010 album that are like their work on Only By The Night, but I sure hope they have some tracks similar to the ones on their first 3 albums.

P.S. Trani is AWESOME. It took my breath away when they played it live :)

In response to GinaM,
Sorry...I completely disagree with your statement suggesting that all fans are the same. I think your exact words were: "A fan is a fan is a fan." You have missed the mark completely.
The reason why longtime followers of KOL are annoyed with their "new" fans is that they claim to be these huge supporters yet the majority don't even know they have a song called "Fans". If its not on Only By The Night they probably don't know it.
I saw the Kings last year in a club just as the new album was being released and the show was amazing. The band was awesome and the crowd was incredible. Everyone knew the words to the entire set.....it was a fantastic night. I had a chance to see them again this September and what a difference a year makes. The show was at a sports arena and about 14,000 people showed up. The band put on a good show but the experience was tainted by the majority of this crowd sitting around bored until the band played "Sex On Fire". My girlfriend and I sang along with the band to every song while bystanders looked at us like we were from outerspace.
So to get back to your original statement....YES there is definitely a difference in types of fans. If you liked the new album because its soooo catchy and have ignored the rest of this band's music then, you are not a real fan. You are a Top 40 loving schmuck that should get over Caleb's comments and go by the new Adam Lambert album.

Someone put "thank God Bono, Bruce, or Paul McCartney never turned their back on us fans." Well thats because you are their age. I am 26 so I am around the bands age and when they grow older I will grow older and I doubt they will be disappointed when a fan (their age) shows up to one of their shows 15-20 years from now. I would love for them to win 4 Grammy's for USE SOMEBODY because my fan-dom for the band out weights my dislike for that track. Plus I will look at it as "Those four Grammy's are for all the amazing songs before 2008." Its beyond thunderdome that Caleb has to stand there nite in and out saying "Only By The Night is not our first album, its our fourth." Even E! News Daily Ten doesn't have a clue, and they report on celebrity stuff. I think Sal said "Ah yeah, that Sex On Fire, the new single from Kings of Leon's second album." Do your research. I hope their fifth album is like their first 2, meaning all these "fans" do not buy it. How do you call yourself a FAN when you only know TWO songs out of 53-56 tracks. Im all for you saying "Yeah, I like that song." PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER YOURSELF A FAN UNLESS YOU SEE THEM DO "TRANI" LIVE.

I can't stand this dude. A fan is a fan is a fan. Doesn't matter when they starting liking your music. Most struggling singers/musicians would gladly trade positions with KOL and take a full bank account and sold out concerts. This guy has made more than one remark about moms before. When you give birth it doesn't mean you die and don't like music anymore, especially rock. You might be surprised to know that the "moms" going to today's rather tame rock concerts were the ones you saw in the infamous 80's rock stadium videos pulling the tops over their heads. Or even grandma's who actually saw the legends from the '60s like Beatles, Stones, Black Sabbath, etc..... The point is there is not much rock to choose from. A lot of us "moms" and "dads" enjoy the new music...A lot of the old acts are gone....or their voices are shot. Our money is just as good...So Caleb shut up or go back to being an indie rock act that only your hard core 18 -22 year boys listen to.

12.14.09 4:11 PM

EXACTLY! I second this. there are too many "fans" at their shows waiting for them to play "sex on fire" or "use somebody". the true fans love their old stuff... and new...and certainly would love the "devil song" (as it has been named by the real fans)...
:) im so psyched for their next album. if it's anything like that. its gonna be amazing.

Wow Laughing, he really hit a nerve, eh? I think you may have missed his point. I don't think he was "disparaging" a certain age level of fans, I think when he said "mom who wouldn't let me date her daughters" it was more a shot against a certain mentality of listeners than their age. I don't know you but I'm guessing that if you were a mom you'd be the type to allow your daughter to date whomever she wanted provided he/she wasn't dangerous. I mean let's face it cool moms read Spin, right? I think he's talking more about people who listen to easy rock stations who stumbled upon their music because now their music is being played more universally. I'm a 40+ year old man and I love their older stuff. It's raw, raunchy, and has an edge and personality that their newest album does not. I understand his frustration and to me it sounds as if his disillusionment/musings about his fans could be as much about himself and his bandmates as about their audience. Don't take it personally.

Cheers

Im so bored of this guy. Interview after interview before Only By the Night came out all he and his bandmates did was complaint about how they wanted to be BIG in America. So they abandoned the hard rocking sound that made their band so good (powerful and raw) before and went with an incredibly commercial, catchy, pop sound, i.e. they sold out, and now they are complaining because they got exactly what they wanted?! Give me a break.

not a mom, but really annoyed with anyone who indicates that someone of a certain age, gender, or social status doesn't get "rock"....please. Unlike previous generations, the current boomer generation was raised on it. And on lots harder stuff than is permeating the airwaves now, including KOL. I had not heard of this band before SOF..but liked it enough to want to explore more of their music and go to a show. Now, I think I'll save my money. Since I'm over 40 I might not be deemed good enough to be there. But they might want to keep in mind that "tweens" grow up to be college students, college students and other young adults eventually hit 40, and people in their 40s and 50s have the most money to buy music and attend shows. Good thing Bono, Bruce, and Paul McCartney didn't disparage their fan base...it's allowed them to continue to be huge in their 50s and 60s. If KOL wants to be small and cater to a certain group of fans of a certain demographic..(whatever that is)..then I'm sure that could happen for them. And to whoever said that it shouldn't matter how an artist treats their fans...well.....I don't care how talented someone is, if they're a total dickhead...no, I'm not interested. When an artist is appreciative, it makes you want to support them even more. KOL wouldn't be where they are today without their fans. So he should really take a long hard look at what he wants in life. Cause he just might get it.

In response to "Casie the Bitter Mom" and your comments about not spending a dime on the Kings of Leon:
On behalf of Caleb and the band, I will say......Thankyou and Good Riddance!!!!!! The band and their real fans are tired of all the teenyboppers, fratboys and middled aged soccer moms that are claiming to be fans. If you can name three songs from their first album without having to google, then you are more then welcome at the shows. If you are only there because "Use Somebody" is sooooo catchy, then pleeeeeze spend your dimes elsewhere. Going to a KOL show used to be a really cool experience...now the show is full of souless d-bags standing with their arms folded until they hear "Sex on Fire".....no wonder the band is annoyed.

The fans who are fighting the good fight for Caleb and defending him are as crazy as those American Idol fans who spam articles defending their favorite no matter what. Caleb is clearly an ass, and a pathetic one at that. Most artists appreciate all of their fans, but he's way above that. If that's being true to himself, that's being true to being ****. So that's what he is. Defending him on it is laughable. Not to worry, soon enough he'll be a hasbeen because karma is like that and then he can live happy in obscurity of his own arrogance.

i comppleeetly agree with you. Whenever "Sex on Fire" or "Use Somebody" comes on the radio, I have to change the channel because as much as I love Kings of Leon, the songs break my heart. I saw them at the Spectrum in Philadelphia and I was so bummed about all the "bro's" I saw.
