Kendrick Lamar Makes Everyone Feel Better in ‘i’ Video

Kendrick Lamar, i, Music Video

Much has been made about how positive and inspirational Kendrick Lamar’s song “i” is — the rapper recently said he wrote it as an affirmational anthem for inmates and suicidal teens. So you’d be forgiven for being a little confused at the start of the new music video, which looks like it’s just going to be a typical hip-hop video about an extravagant party in a club. But then, just as it seems like a fight is about to break out, the music cuts out, and “i” begins in earnest.

Kendrick dances his way out of the club and into the streets, past numerous people that look down on their luck. As they join him in dancing to the funky Isley Brothers-sampling beat, everything seems to be a little better. Neither the video nor the message of the song are over-the-top. They’re simply a restrained but joyful suggestion that everyone should take Kendrick’s advice and love themselves regardless of any issues in their lives. Check it out above.
