Late-night loneliness never sounded exhilarating

Kate Nash is coming into her powers at just the right time. The keenly observant singer and songwriter's piano-based 2007 debut album, Made of Bricks, topped the charts in her native U.K. when she was only 20. She could've kept aiming for the pop mainstream and burned out or faded away, but instead she reacted against that success with 2010's riot-grrl-inspired My Best Friend Is You. If she didn't quite convince as a feral punk-rock revolutionary, her inescapable down-to-earthness ultimately helped make that record all the more beguiling.

"I don't have time to die," Nash declared fatly on last fall's bumptious Death Proof EP title track, and she has wasted none previewing her upcoming Girl Talk album with another Britpop-informed gem. "3AM" is spiky, superbly catchy indie-dance-night fodder about wee hours spent pining for that special someone, delivered with the singer's characteristic frankness. No Drake-style drunk dialing from Nash, but here's another reason to suspect she's emerging from her breakthrough debut and difficult second album in peak form. Girl Talk is due out in March, you can pre-order it here, and she's gradually unveiling the tracklist via Twitter/Instagram. "Passion is tricky," Nash sings; she's increasingly got it down.
