Having predicted a riot last year, the Kaiser Chiefs made good on that premonition, snatching up three statues at last night’s BRIT awards.
The band’s wins for Best British Group, Best British Rock Act and Best Live Act, made them the big winners at the annual awards show, which took place on February 15 at Earl’s Court in west London, according to NME.
Green Day, Coldplay and James Blunt followed close behind with two awards each, and while we assume that what Coldplay frontman Chris Martin meant to say was how honored he was to be receiving the awards, here’s what he unloaded instead: “People are fed up with us and so are we. You won’t see us at one of these for many, many years. We mean it.”
Could Martin’s remarks be the early signs of rocker self-loathing, a sign of that “exhaustion” that plagues some of our biggest pop stars, or did he really mean Coldplay would be taking a break?

From one band that hinted at leaving, to another that didn’t show up, the Arctic Monkeys won for Best British Breakthrough Act, but weren’t there to accept that award. Instead, they filmed a video acceptance speech in which they were joined by what looked like a possible new member.
Madonna, who was just treated for a hernia, won for Best International Female and gave shout outs to David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Portishead, Radiohead, Goldfrapp and the Pet Shop Boys when accepting her award.
Coldplay, Prince, Kaiser Chiefs, James Blunt, Kelly Clarkson and KT Tunstall all performed, while Kanye West topped them all by having 77 female dancers clad in bikinis and gold body paint join him on stage as he performed “Gold Digger.” Gorillaz, however, one-upped Mr. West by performing alongside 100 Manchester schoolchildren while they performed “Dirty Harry.”
