Hear Justin Bieber Not Suck on Chance the Rapper Collab ‘Confident’

Justin Bieber Chance Rapper 'Confident' Vic Mensa Suitcase

Justin Bieber’s collaboration with SPIN’s Rapper of the Year, Chance the Rapper, is here. Fans of the latter may have initially scoffed at the idea of this team-up, which arrives hot on the heels of Childish Gambino’s “The Worst Guys,” but the embattled pop star has thankfully been letting the music speak for him these days, and it hasn’t been half bad. Meanwhile, our favorite young Chicago MC is always excellent, so the math actually adds up for “Confident.”

The latest entry in the Biebz’s #MusicMondays series finds our host cooing a very Frank Ocean-like “oh no no” between yearning lines about encountering a bold woman from another land. The slowly bubbling beat, built on a slight reggae groove, is a solid foundation for the acrobatic scat-raps of Chance, who opens with, “Tattoos. Piercings. And she just learned to twerk.” If this song has a flaw, it’s that the guest doesn’t get more space.

Our friend Vic Mensa, also from the SAVEMONEY crew, makes up for that though on “Suitcase,” wherein the Rapper plays the part of a deadbeat dad, acting as devil’s advocate over a similarly synthy, loose track. Stream both songs below, and peruse SPIN’s 40 Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2013 (plus our 50 Best Albums of the Year, period) to find out where Chance’s Acid Rap landed.
