Hear Jessie Ware Sing on Julio Bashmore’s House Throwback ‘Peppermint’

Julio Bashmore, Jessie Ware, "Peppermint," stream

Julio Bashmore recently worked on music for Jessie Ware, and now the smooth London singer has returned the favor for the forward-leaning Bristol, U.K., producer. Bashmore helmed Ware’s “Imagine It,” released as part of the “Gold Edition” of her Essential album Devotion. He also produced her masterful breakout track “110%,” which had to be called “You’re Never Gonna Move” after sample-clearance troubles. Now Ware lends her vocals to Castor’s “Peppermint,” which just debuted on BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac’s show. The sparse four-on-floor bounce and repeated dance-diva “I’m hot for you” hook nod toward vintage Chicago house — specifically, Lil Louis’ “I’m Hot for You” — but crucially, those echoes of the past cruise through a silvery contemporary sensibility. You could almost say Bashmore underuses Ware’s dusky coo, if that understated quality wasn’t already part of her allure.
