Watch Julian Casablancas Unveil Epic New Song ‘Ego’ at Surprise Show

Julian Casablancas, "Ego," video, Voids, new song, surprise show, secret, Pensacola, Florida

Julian Casablancas has been debuting new material at surprise shows with his backing band the Voidz, and now Consequence of Sound points to fan video of the Strokes frontman performing an unreleased song known as “Ego,” above. The sound quality is a bit distorted, but you can make out that it’s a bristling, uptempo garage-rocker that could represent a natural continuation as Casablancas readies his as-yet-untitled sophomore solo album; the song stretches out to more than five minutes, and there’s a flashy guitar solo partway through. Last night’s gig took place at the Handlebar in Pensacola, Florida, which we’ll hope was inspired by the Deerhunter song named after that city, and according to Setlist.fm, Casablancas actually debuted “Ego” the prior night at One Eyed Jacks in New Orleans. He’s set to play during South By Southwest on March 15 at the FADER Fort. Stay tuned for more details about the follow-up to 2009’s Phrazes of the Young.
