Singer-guitarist John Mayer apologized for using a racial slur in a recent Playboy interview via a string of tweets yesterday.

"I am sorry that I used the [N-]word," Mayer said to his 3 million-plus Twitter followers. "I should have never said the word and I will never say it again."

In Playboy, Mayer was speaking about his strong African American fanbase, and his collaborations and friendships with big time rappers. "Someone asked me the other day, 'What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?'" he told Playboy. "And by the way, it's sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n-----r pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass?"

Via Twitter, Mayer not only expressed remorse for his use of the N-word, but reflected about his oft-outspoken public persona, something that's been amplified by his massive Twitter following.

"I just wanted to play the guitar for people," he posted. "Everything else just sort of popped up and I improvised, and kept doubling down on it.... I think it's time to stop trying to be so raw in interviews."

The racial slur wasn't the only hot subject in Mayer's Playboy interview. The rock star gushed about his steamy romance with pop starlet Jessica Simpson. "[T]hat girl is like crack cocaine to me," Mayer said. "Sexually it was crazy. That's all I'll say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm."
