Joanna Newsom is bound for the big screen. As the Playlist reports, the harp-strumming singer-songwriter will appear in Inherent Vice, the next film by director Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master, There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights). The upcoming feature, which is based on the Thomas Pynchon novel of the same name, takes place in Los Angeles at the turn of the 1970s. According to IMDb, the plot follows a “drug-fueled detective” as he investigates the disappearance of one of his ex-girlfriends.

As of now, there’s no word on what role Newsom is playing, but photos of the California plucker on set have surfaced (via Eyeprime). Inherent Vice is currently filming and due for release sometime in 2014. The cast features Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Jena Malone, (possibly) Sean Penn, and Anderson’s real-life domestic partner, Maya Rudolph. Anderson recently directed “Hot Knife,” the latest music video from Fiona Apple, Anderson’s former girlfriend.
