Jim James Glides Through Combustive ‘State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.)’ on ‘Letterman’

Jim James, "State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.)," David Letterman

Jim James set off a slowly detonating mystic-rock explosion last night on Late Show With David Letterman. The My Morning Jacket frontman performed “State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.),” from new solo album Regions of Light and Sound of God, and he knew just how to keep the song patiently building toward catharsis. While holding forth on the paradoxes of technology in a way that oughta interest M.I.A., James ultimately wound up at center stage wailing on a guitar. But mostly he was instrument-less, gliding back and forth as if to show that more recent comer Father John Misty ain’t monster-folk’s only dancing fool. “I liked everything about that!” the host exclaimed, and he wasn’t wrong.
