Jenny Lewis’ Next Solo Album Is ’80 Percent’ Finished

Since Rilo Kiley confirmed their split in 2011, former frontwoman Jenny Lewis has occupied her time by providing guest vocals (and pot cookies!) for the upcoming Wavves album Afraid of Heights, and by acting as music supervisor/score composer for director Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal’s Sundance-featured Very Good Girls. Now, despite the Rilo Kiley B-sides and rarities compilation that accidentally spawned reunion rumors earlier this month, Lewis is nearing the finish line for her follow-up to 2008’s solo album, Acid Tongue.

In an interview with Billboard, Lewis confirmed her third one-woman full-length is “80 percent” done. “I have to write three more songs,” she told the magazine. “I had started [the record] but I had to put it on hold to work on [Very Good Girls]… Now that I am done (with the film) I can get back to that.”

The female half of Jenny and Johnny wouldn’t commit to a hard deadline for the record, noting that, “Sometimes you have to write five shitty songs to get to the good one.” But Lewis said she’s eyeing a late 2013 or early 2014 release. First, she needs to embark on a spring 2013 tour “with one of [her] bands” (she declined to share any further details on that project, but we’re probably not the first to smell yet another Coachella rumor cooking up), take a brief break, and then hit the road again as a solo performer. “Hopefully in between the tours I will get my record finished and get it out at end of this year or early next year,” she said. Not a formal announcement, but definitely not bad news.
