James Blake Is Working With Kanye and Justin Vernon, New Album Halfway Complete

James Blake New Album Kanye Justin Vernon

The British beatsmith James Blake is deep in the midst of a set of international festival dates, the most recent of which brought him to Manchester, Tennessee for Bonnaroo. While there, in addition to his forlorn set, he sat down for an interview with Billboard, in which he revealed the status of his new album and a few of his high-profile collaborators.

Blake says that each of the songs for his follow-up to Overgrown (reportedly due in 2015) is about “50 percent done.” Though other details are scant at this point, he did reveal that he’s been writing with his “Fall Creek Boys Choir” collaborator Justin Vernon and will likely continue to do so. He also mentioned that he’s been working “sporadically” with Kanye, “when he’s around” (which is likely precious little, now that he has a new album of his own in progress). Blake mentioned an unnamed third collaborator that he’s “really excited about,” but declined to say who it was at this time.

You can watch the short Q&A above, and stream Blake’s whole set at Bonnaroo below.
