Jai-Alai Savant’s Batman-Inspired Track

The Jai-Alai Savant (pronounced hi-a-lie sa-vant) is a virtual revolving door of contributing musicians. A Chicago-based trio at their core, the band has a laundry list of past contributors and guest musicians (which include members of the Mars Volta, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, and the Watchers, to name a few). In “White on White Crime,” a skank-worthy cut from upcoming debut Flight of the Bass Delegate, Fred Erskien (Just A Fire / June of 44 / Hoover) guest stars on horns and adds a dub-soaked element to the mix, while producer Major Taylor augmented with outer-worldly vibes courtesy of space-age zaps, delays, and echoes.

As for the song’s lyrics, frontman Ralph Darden said they were inspired by his geeky hobbies. “I’m a huge comic book and sci-fi nerd,” he explained. “Flight of the Bass Delegate has a series of songs that tell a story of a superhero vigilante that goes insane fighting off mechanized invaders. Being a huge fan of Frank Miller’s Batman the Dark Knight Returns comic, I felt like I needed to pay homage to one of my all-time favorite vigilante superheroes: Batman.”

And within these lines, Darden plants an Easter egg element. “The last line of the bridge into the last verse: Be A Terroist Making A Name. This was yet another homage to one of my all-time favorite groups, the Wu Tang Clan, who were infamous for using hidden acronyms in their songs.”
