Watch J. Roddy Walston & the Business’ ‘Nirvana-Esque’ Cover of Little Richard’s ‘Lucille’

J. Roddy Walston & The Business 'Lucille' Stream Little Richard

J. Roddy Walston & the Business are currently on tour in support of their must-hear third album, the recently released Essential Tremors, but footage of a brilliantly sloppy gig the Southern-raised punks played a few months ago has just been uncovered. Filmed at New York City’s Mercury Lounge this past June, the clip catches the rag-tag crew shredding Little Richard’s iconic “Lucille.”

“Little Richard’s original recording of Lucille is just one of the greatest rock’n’roll vocal takes of all time,” Walston told SPIN. “So of course, like a fool, I said we should up the tempo, stretch out the riffs, and cover this song. We wanted the energy to be somewhere between real deal rock’n’roll and a full on Nirvana-esque freak out. It worked and I think it helped us see where we wanted Essential Tremors to land.”

Take a peak at where J. Roddy Walston & the Business ended up by watching their cover of “Lucille” above. To witness the foursome’s ramshackle live shows firsthand, scroll down for upcoming tour dates. And Essential Tremors is now available through iTunes.
