Iron and Wine’s ‘Boy’ Grows Up

For those exhausted of getting their “drink” on with Iron and Wine’s version of the Postal Service favorite “Such Great Heights,” rest easy — the Florida-based neo-folkie, a.k.a. Samuel Beam, is back from his M&M’s commercial ride, ready to deliver a fresh batch of original material this summer beginning with the single “Boy With a Coin.”

Equal parts singer, songwriter, and storyteller, the strength of Beam’s old-school folk-like fare is more apparent than ever. The percussion-heavy song — shining with expertly lamented images of growth, sadness, religion, and evolution — rings out with bongos, hand-claps, and accents of subtle distortion recalling Wilco’s experimental Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Characterized by the band’s signature layered vocals and dreamy wordless choruses, the single signifies tremendous growth thanks to its sweet integration of a rootsy pedal steel guitar and quality level of production. Boy With a Coin — single and EP — officially drops July 10th via Sub Pop as a precursor to Iron and Wine’s long-awaited fourth album, Shepherd’s Dog (out September 25th).
