The Hot Star in Cannes: Al Gore?

The two hottest things at this week’s Cannes Film Festival: Al Gore and his documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. While Halle Berry, Rebecca Romijn, and the stars of X-Men 3 litter red carpets, Gore’s stirring film about the potential hazards of global warming — one disturbing demonstration shows melting ice caps could submerge major world cities — has been the talk of the festival. See the trailer and see why, as Gore says, “Our ability to live is what is at stake.”

Here’s what the people are saying:

“In Cannes, the talk is all about 2008. That’s because even with Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Penelope Cruz, Jamie Foxx, and Halle Berry here for the film festival, the hottest star in town is Al Gore.” — Ariana Huffington, The Huffington Post

“Al Gore was right about global warming — way back in the 1980s…. In a rational world, this would make Gore a reigning star — but we live in the world of a millionaire press corps, and we suffer, every day, from its judgments.” — The Daily Howler

An Inconvenient Truth is not the most entertaining film of the year. But it might be the most important.” — The New Yorker

“I went to a screening of the Al Gore movie. And I found myself walking out in a strange mood. I had just seen a movie featuring a politician…and there wasn’t a trace of snark or cynicism coursing through my body.” — The New Republic
