We visited the L.A. pad of Alex Ebert, frontman of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, solo artist, and all-around free spirit, and checked out his favorite things, from his big comfy hammock to fan-sourced artwork to his own personal metal detector.

He may resemble a mellow nature boy, but Alex Ebert, 33, is no layabout. Hot on the charmingly scuffed heels of his recent solo debut, Alexander (Community), he’s already begun recording the follow-up to Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros’ left-field hit Up From Below, due later this year.
The band also just wrapped a brief whistle-stop U.S. tour with Mumford & Sons and will deliver its rambunctious, epic folk rock to festivals all summer long, much to the singer’s pleasure. “Anything that’s got a daytime vibe I’m really into,” he says. “I love picnics. Straw hat, barefoot — you get the vibe.”
