Here We Go Magic Found John Waters on the Side of the Road

Brooklyn art-rockers Here We Go Magic probably aren't the first band to give a hitchhiker a lift cruising from venue to venue on tour, but their recent pickup by far wins for Best Mustache — and Best Director of Cry-Baby. While on the road supporting their latest effort, A Different Ship (which dropped May 2 via Secretly Canadian), the band (more specifically, bassist Jen Turner) tweeted proof that they had indeed picked up director John Waters off the side of the road.

"There's a hydro-fracking boom in western Pennsylvania. You can't get a motel room. We had to drive till 4 a.m. and finally found a Days Inn in eastern Ohio," guitarist Michael Bloch wrote in an e-mail. "Getting back on the highway this morning, there was a man at the side of the on-ramp with a sign that read 'To the end of Rte 70.' Jen wanted to pick him up, but we drove past him. As we passed by, our sound guy said, 'John Waters.' [Frontman] Luke [Temple] said, 'Yep, definitely John Waters.' We got off at the next exit and circled back. He was still there. We pulled up, opened the door, and asked where he was coming from. 'Baltimore,' he said. And we said, 'Get in, sir.' "

According to Bloch and the band's camp, they and Waters just parted ways, after several educational hours wherein the band became aware of "new words like 'Trendsexual' and 'Blouse.'" He's not the first legend they've encountered, though; they told SPIN earlier this year about that fortuitous time they met Nigel Godrich, which led to his work on Ship.
