Trent Reznor revealed in January that he was teaming up with collaborator Atticus Ross to score director David Fincher's adaptation of Stieg Larsson's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, set to hit theaters on December 21. The official website for the movie has just launched with trailers and character outlines - but perhaps the biggest asset on the site is a seven-minute preview of Reznor and Ross' contributions. Hear it here (via /Film).

Reznor, who won an Oscar for his score to The Social Network, said that his Tattoo soundtrack would be based "on performance, nothing programmed" and that it would be processed "in a way that gives it a really interesting, organic, layered feel." That's definitely true of this preview: It's a hypnotic instrumental drone featuring moaning electric guitars, tinkling chimes, and other cool ambient effects.

Don't expect the rest of their music to sound as haunting and laid-back. Back in May, Reznor and Ross' collaboration with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O hit the web. The tune, a wild cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," was included in a trailer for Tattoo.
