What if all of the grooming products marketed to insecure young men actually had the irresistible effect portrayed in advertisements? The results might be something like Diplo’s remix of Katy B’s “Witches Brew.”

The original, from the British singer’s On a Mission (one of SPIN’s 20 Best Pop Albums of 2011), is a winsome dubstep-pop take on a musical tradition that dates back to Lieber-Stoller’s “Love Potion No. 9″ and Screamin’ Jay Hawkin’s “I Put a Spell on You” — in other words, it’s about casting a romantic spell on someone.

Major Lazer member and Mad Decent label chief Diplo returns the seduction on this strong (re-)brew, amping up the original with an aggressiveness — some would call it a “masculine” aggressiveness — born out of American dubstep. Shouts of “hey” and whining sub-bass add a tinge of menace to Katy’s vocals: “Now there’s no escaping me,” she insists. Watch out, ladies.

So, is the toil worth the trouble? In this case, luckily, yes. Call it the Diplo effect. (Via Fact)
