Hear Kanye West Warble About an Ex in Long, Live Auto-Tune Riff

Kanye West

Auto-Tune has its uses! You know that thing where singer-songwriters make up extra, occasionally goofy lyrics for their songs in concert, so you know just how effortlessly they compose their sensitive, sensitive singer-songwriter songs? And how sometimes those ad libs are about phone calls, or ex-girlfriends, or maybe texting? Kanye West just basically did that — if he was rapping we’d simply call it a freestyle — with the Auto-Tune providing some melodic support. During a recent performance of 808s and Heartbreak cut “Say You Will” in Melbourne, Australia, West launched into a funny, disarmingly frank seven-minute narrative, sung alone over keyboard, about exchanging late-night texts with a romantic interest.
