Did Gwen Stefani rip off her new song “Baby Don’t Lie” from a Swedish singer? Probably not, but it’s fun to note the similarities. Fans of said Swedish singer, Ji Nilsson, pointed out that the No Doubt frontwoman’s latest solo track sounds an awful lot like the Scandinavian diva’s “Heartbreakfree” from earlier this year, and she seemed to agree. “People all over the internet are saying [Gwen Stefani’s] ‘Baby Don’t Lie’ sounds just like my previous single ‘Heartbreakfree’! Do u agree?,” Nilsson tweeted, though she’s taking the alleged theft very well.

“I have not been sitting around waiting to say that a famous artist copied the production of my song,” she clarified once she began to take some heat from Stefani faithful. “Blogs started to write about it and people agreed so I listened to ‘Baby Don’t Lie’ and yes, I agree that the production sounds alot [sic] like ‘Heartbreakfree.'”

“I love @gwenstefani and No Doubt, ‘Don’t Speak’, ‘Just A Girl’ and ‘Cool’ are AMAZING songs,” she continued. It’s highly doubtful that Stefani heard or stole Nilsson’s track, but we wouldn’t be totally shocked if her producers Ryan Tedder and Benny Blanco heard it at some point and were inspired. The two songs sound similar, but they’re doing slightly different things — “Baby Don’t Lie” has more of a reggae-pop feel to it, while “Heartbreakfree” is more a much more surreal track.
