Greg Dulli: No Label Required

After surviving both independent and major label contracts, former Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli is circumventing the record companies and going straight to independent retailers with his new solo album, Amber Headlights, Billboard.com reports. Dulli had been sitting album Amber Headlights since 2001 because of the death of his close friend, filmmaker Ted Demme, and also his work with the Twilight Singers.

Dulli's manager, Brian McPherson, told Billboard about the monetary benefit of releasing an album without the label help. "If we sell 5,000 of this ourselves," McPherson claims, "it's equivalent to selling 40,000 on a label." The album is available on Dulli's web site, at indie outlets, and through Amazon. Dulli will continue to work with the indie label One Little Indian when he works with the Twilight Singers, telling Billboard, "I have a pretty good deal with the Indian, and they're good people. But this has been an eye-opening experience financially."
