Green Day Cover 'Simpsons' Jingle

SoCal pop punk trio gear up for release of The Simpsons theme song single, appearance in film.

Citizens of Springfield, prepare to rock! Green Day will cover the quirky, Danny Elfman-penned Simpsons theme song for the soundtrack to The Simpsons Movie, the silver-screen adaptation of the blockbuster TV animated series that hits theatres July 27. In addition to having been confirmed for an appearance in the film, the band -- Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool -- will punk up the discernible jingle and dispatch it as a single July 24, three days prior to the film's release. According to Billboard.com, the single will be available via three different companies and in as many forms; Warner Bros. will offer the traditional Green Day single, Fox Music will release a digital score album via its website and other outlets, and, in the most Homer approved move, Extreme Music will release 25,000 pink doughnut cases to select retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, and Barnes & Noble.

In response to the news, bloggers, both fervent fans of The Simpsons and Green Day, are taking to the web and sounding off with a wide range of reactions. While some celebrate the union of their beloved pop culture entities, others discount the band's involvement, restlessly await the film's arrival, and propose alternate selections for the theme song's makeover.
