Grab Everest’s Brawny ‘Rapture’

If your taste skews toward wholesome, muscular, meat-and-potatoes rock’n’roll, you might’ve heard the name Everest come up here and there in the past few years. You may also remember seeing them warm up arenas for Neil Young in 2008, a job for which the legendary songwriter handpicked the Los Angeles-based quintet. Or maybe you caught them paying tribute to late Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten a year later, or even (last one, we swear) as openers for My Morning Jacket’s spring tour last year. They’ve certainly paid their dues.

But now, the band is prepping for the release of Ownerless, their third album, due June 26 via ATO. “Rapture,” the album’s ornery opener, braids CSNY harmonies with the angular licks of Franz Ferdinand. It’s a three-minute slice of summer — no frills, but that’s exactly the point.
