Gorillaz to Release Greatest Hits & Other News

Gorillaz will release a 15-track compilation of singles, videos, and remixes to commemorate the multiplatinum cartoon band’s 10th anniversary. The Singles Collection arrives November 29 and will be available on CD, CD DVD, vinyl, and limited-edition 7″ box set, Daman Albarn and Co. have announced. Check out the tracklist and explore an interactive widget for the release below.

Prior to the announcement, Gorillaz character Murdoc Niccals issued a series of cryptic posts on Twitter, prompting speculation the band might call it quits. “Ten years old, eh?” one post says. “T.E.N. What’s that stand for? The End is Nigh…!”

Gorillaz are the creation of Albarn, who previously fronted Blur, and comic book artist Jamie Hewlett. Rather than record under their own names, the two dreamed up a set of characters: Murdoc, Noodle, 2D, and Russel Hobbs. Over the course of four studio albums, including 2001’s smash-hit self-titled debut, Gorillaz have collaborated with a host of collaborators who range from Dangermouse and De La Soul to Lou Reed and even Ike Turner.

The Grammy-winning group also lavishly translated its vision to the stage, most recently with a 48-date 2010 tour that ranked as SPIN’s Live Show of the Year. “I think you overdo it or you don’t bother,” Albarn told us last year.

Sure enough, Albarn has been doing plenty lately, musically speaking. His DRC Music Project released its Kinshasa One Two benefit album digitally this week, with physical copies due out November 8. For the project, Albarn headed to the Democratic Republic of Congro with Gorillaz cohort Dan “The Automator” Nakamura, indie label XL’s Richard Russell, and others to record with more than 50 local musicians. Watch the new video for Kinshasa One Two cut “Hallo” below.

Meanwhile, Albarn is reuniting another one of his bands — the Good, the Bad, and the Queen — for a one-off show to celebrate the 40th birthday of Greenpeace. Albarn, the Clash’s Paul Simonon, the Verve’s Simon Tong, and drummer Tony Allen will perform together for the first time since 2008, according to the U.K. Press Association. The show is set for November 10 at London’s Coronet venue. The Good, the Bad, and the Queen released a self-titled album in 2007.

A solo album could be next for Albarn. “I’d like to do a record with my own name on it,” he told the NME. “That’s the next one I want to make. I don’t know if I cold bear to start a band from scratch again.”
