Gomez Get Eco-Friendly on Tour

Gomez are putting the environment first on their fall tour, teaming up with Clif Bar & Co. to launch the GreenNotes program, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of touring bands.

When the band kicks off their tour tonight in the eco-friendly city of Burlington, VT, they’ll be working to lessen their impact on the environment by using biodiesel fuel in their tour bus; offsetting the tour’s carbon-dioxide emissions through the purchase of renewable wind energy credits; using recycled paper and soy-based inks for printed materials; providing organic cotton merchandise options for fans; requesting organic food backstage at all shows; minimizing the idling of tour buses; and staying at hotels identified as more sustainable.

In partnership with Clif Bar and the GreenNotes program, the band will encourage other touring bands and fans to create positive environmental change within the music community, and will offer suggestions on how to lighten their environmental footprint through the program’s website. Bands will receive an environmental assessment and overhaul of their touring operations and will be provided with the education, tools, and incentives to enlist fan support.

“We’re really excited to have the opportunity to partner with Clif Bar to bring this program to life,” Tom Gray, singer for Gomez, said in a statement. “It’s 50 percent about what we’re doing and 50 percent about encouraging our fans to consider their own environmental footprint and to take small steps to reduce it. It’s one thing for a band to do something it is another for a fan to say yeah, I want to know how I can do something.”

Matt Pond PA will provide tour support the band Oct. 8 through Oct. 27, with Rodrigo y Gabriela opening on select dates. Stay tuned to SPIN.com later this month as we present an appearance by Gomez in our SpinHouse Live series.
