German Prosecutors Keep an Eye on Madonna

Officials in Dusseldorf will be keeping close watch on the singer at her upcoming show to ensure she doesn't insult religious beliefs.

When Madonna takes the stage in Dusseldorf, Germany this weekend, she will do so under the watchful eye of prosecutors checking to see if the singer performs her mock crucifixion, which they say could be construed as insulting religious beliefs. The stage set-up -- in which Madge is perched on a cross and wears a crown of thorns -- has already drawn the ire of the Roman Catholic Church, who view the performance as an act of hostility. While prosecutors will not attend the show themselves, they will rely on media reports to find out whether Madonna has in fact mounted her neon cross. Still, Johannes Mocken, spokesman for prosecutors in Dusseldorf, told the AP that the show might be covered by laws protecting artistic freedoms. Madonna's reps have repeatedly insisted the scene is not meant to be disrespectful toward the church.
