See Garbage and Screaming Females Record Patti Smith’s ‘Because the Night’

Garbage & Screaming Females' Record Store Day 10" Cover Art

Butch Vig laying into a drum kit is a good way to start any video, but this one only gets better from there. In the clip above, Garbage and Screaming Females team up to record a studio version of “Because the Night,” the Patti Smith cover they debuted on the road together last year. Shirley Manson and Marissa Paternoster’s budding womance was already a well-documented thing, but the rest of the members of the bands gel awesomely as well. The Sophie Mueller-directed video includes lots of charming footage of the two groups bonding, and seeing the two frontwomen trade lines is fantastic. But the highlight comes when Paternoster starts to shred. Fans of both bands, either band, team-ups in general, or Patti specifically, will be pleased to learn that the song will be pressed to a limited-edition vinyl 10-inch to be sold on Record Store Day. We have a feeling Miss Smith will be proud.
