Gaga to Open VMAs, Patti Smith Movie + More

  • Lady Gaga stopped by MTV HQ Thursday afternoon with a special message: She'll deliver the opening performance at the Video Music Awards, which she announced by having fans, aka Little Monsters, unfurl a massive banner in New York's Times Square. "I thought as usual, instead of me announcing it, I'd let the Little Monsters do it for me," she said. Gaga is nominated for three awards, including Best Female Video for "Born This Way" and Best Art Direction And Best Choreography for "Judas." Adele, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, and Young The Giant are also set to perform at the VMAs, which will air live from Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on August 28. [Via Billboard]

  • Punk legend Patti Smith's National Book Award-winning 2010 memoir Just Kids is headed to the silver screen. Smith is working with Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan (The Aviator, Gladiator) to adapt the best-selling book, which documents her early years living with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in New York City in the 1960s and '70s.   • On October 11, Mom + Pop Records will release Chicago-based songsmith Andrew Bird's score for the film Norman, which opens on October 21. Starring Emily VanCamp (ABC's Brothers and Sisters), Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under), Adam Goldberg (Entourage), and Dan Byrd (Easy A), the film is about a troubled high school kid who is pretending to be dying from cancer.   • Grammy Award-winning rapper/R&B smoothy Common is set to release his autobiography One Day It'll All Make Sense on September 13. Named after his third album, the book "tells what it was like for a boy with big dreams growing up on the South Side of Chicago," reads a description on Amazon, where the book is now available to pre-order. "He recounts his rise to stardom, giving a behind-the-scenes look into the recording studios, concerts, movie sets, and after-parties of a hip-hop celebrity and movie star." [Via Rap Radar]
