Gabby Glaser Still Has the ‘Spirit’

They say that musical trends are cyclical. And if so, the world’s been waiting for the cool, collected grooves of resident New Yorker Gabby Glaser, co-founder of ’90s seminal girl group Luscious Jackson. With a steady dose of garage rock, R&B, and hip-hop, the NYC group issued three studio albums for the Beastie Boys former label, Grand Royal before going on hiatus in 2000. While her fellow rock sista Jill Cunniff hits the City Beach, Glaser makes a “splash” of her own.

“Spirit of Long Island”, one of Glaser’s many soul-flavored rock gems featured on her solo debut, Gimme Splash (available now via the Latchkey indie imprint), remains an ode to listening to the stereo with the top down, wind whipping through your hair on the Long Island expressway. Grimy garage guitar solos accompany call and response vocals, heading into a psychedelic frenzy of funky bass line and incredibly hooky chorus as Glaser calls out, “In the spirit of Long Island/I’m gonna sing my song.” It’s a little Kim Deal and a lotta Hendrix, sure to incite some summer lovin’.
