Fucked Up’s Soulfully Sludgy ’21st Century Cling-Ons’ Surfaces on Melvins Split Series

Fucked Up '21st Century Cling-Ons' Melvins Sugar Daddy Live Split

Melvins mastermind King Buzzo tipped SPIN off last Marchabout his band’s just-released split 12-inch with Toronto hardcore beasts Fucked Up. As part of the Seattle noiseniks’ ongoing Sugar Daddy Live vinyl single series, this new very limited platter has already been scooped up from the Amphetamine Reptile label’s web store, but that doesn’t mean you can’t hear what’s on it.

The Melvins’ contribution is a live rendition of (A) Senile Animal thrasher “Rat Faced Granny,” while Fucked Up offer a strange bit of soulful sludge called “21st Century Cling-Ons.” The first part of the track swings and lilts like a ’50s teen idol joint, while Damien Abraham goes in like Tom Waits transforming into a werewolf. After that, we’re treated to an additional song’s worth of punk shred and psych-blues freaking that recalls some of the more epic moments on Fucked Up’s 2011 opus David Comes to Life, which happened to be SPIN’s Album of the Year at the time. Stream it now at Pitchfork.
