Franz Ferdinand Play Seven New Songs Live, Here Are Two

Franz Ferdinand’s long-awaited fourth album is due late this summer and as a run-up to the forthcoming release, the Glaswegian post-punk rockers played seven new songs during an intimate club show on Wednesday night. The 40-minute set at Glasgow venue Nice’N’Sleazy relied heavily on as-yet-unreleased material, though several of the tracks have been recent staples of the dance-rock-revivalists’ live show.

Fan-shot footage of non-LP (for now) cuts “Stand on the Horizon,” “Fresh Strawberries,” “Right Thoughts! Right Words! Right Action!,” and “Trees & Animals” have been online for months, but two more fresh tunes surfaced on YouTube today (March 6): “Evil Eye” and “The Blackpool Illuminati.”

Both of the songs recall Queen classics: “Evil Eye” sports a groove lifted from “Another One Bites the Dust,” while on “The Blackpool Illuminati,” Alex Kapranos repeatedly intones, “looking for somebody to love.”

As of now, it’s unclear which, if any, of these songs will appear on the follow-up to 2009’s Tonight: Franz Ferdinand. What we do know, at least according to the NME, is that Veronica Falls frontwoman Roxanne Clifford (recently confirmed to be the cover model on Franz Ferdinand’s 2005 single “Do You Want To”) contributed vocals to the new LP.

Check out “Evil Eye” up top and look below for “The Blackpool Illuminati.”
