French actress Marion Cotillard won an Oscar for her performance as singer Édith Piaf in 2007’s La Vie en Rose. Now Cotillard is taking her role to reality, singing with Franz Ferdinand on “The Eyes of Mars,” a dark, moody ballad with plenty of twists and turns.

The tune — written by Franz Ferdinand — was commissioned by Dior for the fashion company’s new Lady Dior handbag line.

It opens with soft guitar and piano, a little odd for the dance-rock kings, as Cotillard sings, “I see the beautiful / I see the tragedy fall.” Ohhh, dramatic! The music soon follows suit, revving up to a fervor of electric guitar, pounding piano, and drums, as Kapranos and Cotillard holler, “In the eyes of Mars / In the eyes of Mars!”

Whew. Those must be some handbags.

“The Eyes of Mars” is a solid and surprising tune, showing one of rock’s biggest bands experimenting in new territory. Listen over at LadyDior.com, then tell us what you think in the comment section below.
