France’s World Cup Loss Spawns Hit Song

The World Cup’s final bout didn’t show the French team at its finest, but it did inspire three dispirited fans to pen a smash hit. “Coup de Boule” (trans: “Headbutt”), which was written the day after Italy’s World Cup victory over France, has been downloaded over 80,000 times in the less than three weeks since its release. The subjects of the song’s cheeky lyrics: French star Zinedine Zidane’s career-ending play, in which he rammed his noggin into the chest of Italy’s Marco Materazzi, and David Trezeguet’s failure to make a crucial penalty kick in the shootout. The ditty teems with flamenco pop flair, and it’s got a hilarious video in which the clip’s star acts as the announcer, player, referee, and dance leader.
