Foo Fighters Take on ‘Stiff Competition’ With Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick

Foo Fighters, Cheap Trick, Late Show with David Letterman

We have finally arrived at the premiere date for the Foo Fighters‘ new HBO series (with accompanying album to follow) Sonic Highways, but first, we have another Foo performance accompanied by a member of a legendary older band on The Late Show with David Letteman to enjoy.

Last night, the group was joined onstage by Cheap Trick founding member Rick Nielsen, who played guitar and sang backup for the Foos on a performance of his band’s 1978 Heaven Tonight cut “Stiff Competition.” Drummer Taylor Hawkins took the lead on this one, while their usual singer, Dave Grohl, took his Nirvana-era seat in the back, presumably because Hawkins is a dead ringer for Trick singer Robin Zander when dressing in all white.

Watch above, and set the DVR for Highways on HBO at 11:00 EST tonight first stop Chicago, with new best friend Nielsen and producer Steve Albini in tow.
