Here’s Foals’ Dance-Rock Head-Turner ‘My Number’: Don’t Call Them, Maybe?

Foals

Forgive us for exceeding our Carly Rae Jepsen pun limit for the year, but the comparison applies too neatly to the lyrical content, at least, of the newest song from Foals. The formerly Sub Pop-signed British rockers are set to release their upcoming album Holy Fire on February 12 via Warner Bros., and the jittery, dance-y rock of recently surfaced song “My Number” could act as a sort of indie-night riposte to “Call Me Maybe”: “You don’t have my number / We don’t need each other now,” lead singer Yannis Philippakis brays. The layered, percussive track, with a wordless vocal hook, joins an impressive lineage from the spazzy art-funk of Talking Heads to the nu-rave of Klaxons and the danced-up psych-rock of Oracular Spectacular-era MGMT. Following the more bombastic, gnashing “Inhaler,” “My Number” — which Foals also recently performed on Later… With Jools Holland — further suggests Holy Fire could be both excellent and slightly eclectic. Hot night, wind was blowin’, where do you think Foals are going?
