Fall Out Boy Kick Off U.S. Tour

Therewas no shortage of excitement on the opening night of Fall Out Boy’s nationwide tour at Arizona’s Mesa Amphitheatre Friday night, as the Chicago quartet barreled through 20 songs in just over 90 minutes.

Following opening sets from Cobra Starship, Metro Station, and All Time Low, FOB’s show began with video footage of riots in various cities playing on giant projection screens. The group — bassist Pete Wentz, singer Patrick Stump, guitarist Joe Trohman, and drummer Andy Hurley — came onstage sporting suits, accompanied by two men dressed as SWAT officers, and opened with a pair of songs off their latest album, Folie à Deux.

Then Wentz introduced 2005’s “A Little Less Sixteen Candles…” by saying, “This is an old song, but we’re gonna play it anyway, because every song makes money, so shut the fuck up.” Okay…

Though visibly puzzled by Wentz’ comment — and his expletives — the audience danced and chanted along with Fall Out Boy’s chart-topping tunes, which the band delivered plenty of, including “Dance, Dance” and “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s An Arms Race.” Both of those popular songs rang out with a new vigor. The boys bounced across the stage, swinging their instruments with fervent rock star energy, as Wentz’s wife, Ashlee Simpson, sang along offstage.

As usual, Wentz did most of the talking: “There’s a lot of people who got really rich by making a lot of other people very poor,” he said, urging the audience to “look at places like the Congo and Uganda” before the band launched into “Sugar, We’re Goin Down.”

The stage was lit with bursts of yellow, pink, blue, and red — along with a storm of strobe flashes and a neon backdrop that pulsated like a giant equalizer.

The sound was stellar, and the band’s energy, spot-on delivery, and interactions with the audience helped make the 90-minute set in the 5000-capacity venue seem almost intimate.
