EXCLUSIVE: We Are Scientists Go Acoustic

We Are Scientists are known for their infectious mix of punk, funk, and disco — but the Brooklyn-based duo are no strangers to dialing down their sound, either. The band has recorded a spare, somber acoustic version of their latest single, “Rules Don’t Stop,” and the track is available as a free download exclusively at SPIN.com.

As the first single off We Are Scientists’ upcoming album Barbara (out June 15), “Rules Don’t Stop” is a post-punk assault. But here, singer-guitarist Keith Murray and bassist Chris Cain — who have performed acoustic for SPIN.com before — swap the track’s angular electric guitar riffs, drum machines, and speedy synths for slow strums, piano plinks, and soft drums, allowing Murray’s earnest vocals and rebellious lyrics to shine. The track also features ex-Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows, who worked with the band on Barbara.

We Are Scientists are currently touring overseas but will be back on U.S. shores for North American dates in July. Check out their complete itinerary here.
