Exclusive Song from Motion City Soundtrack!

Minneapolis pop punk quintet Motion City Soundtrack are back with their Mark Hoppus-produced fourth album (and major label debut), My Dinosaur Life -- and you can listen to an exclusive stream below of "Her Words Destroyed My Planet," the second tune to be previewed from the album!

"This is the most honest song I've ever written," says frontman Justin Pierre about the cut, which describes "some J.J. Abrams alternative universe reality type shit" about what direction his life might have taken had an ex-girlfriend not broken up with him three years ago.

"There are [people] that I've run into that blame the direction or outcome of their lives on a single incident," Pierre tells SPIN.com. "This idea has always fascinated me."

"Had the woman not split up with me, I would most likely not have spiraled out of control to the point of no return, which allowed me to start over from scratch," the singer/guitarist explains. "What seemed like a tragedy three years ago turned out to be the best thing for both parties involved."

Another fun fact about the song: In its first verse, Pierre sings about falling asleep watching Veronica Mars, a reference to the moment he began to write the tune. "I had just finished watching the final season of Veronica Mars on DVD, so I was relatively upset that there would be no more episodes," Pierre recalls.

Listen to "Her Words Destroyed My Planet" below -- it'll be available for download via iTunes starting tomorrow (Dec. 1). My Dinosaur Life is out Jan. 19.

I just want to say thank you to those of you who are supporting MCS still and thinks that their sound remains awesome! While their original albums were cool I think I'd stop listening if they "went back to their roots". I love the new album and yes it may be a bit different but it still extenuates the originality which makes them who they are! And for those of you who are upset with the new album, you're too old to listen to MCS if you're going to whine and give us a "back in my day" speech. Bands should be able to express their musical freedom without fans turning on them!

To everyone that dislikes this song and the direction the band is going:

Here's the deal guys and gals. Milkshakes melt, people change. Bands are no exception. Why the hell would you ever want a band to go "back to the roots" and do the same $hit they did years ago? Should a band never change their 'sound'? I bet if MCS recorded 4 albums that sounded like 'I am the Movie' not only would they lose fans due to the repetitive nature of staying the same, but they would also lose themselves. As people grow and change they need to be free to grow and change musically as well. As Justin has said many times, EIIKM was a real turning point for him in his life. A lot of those songs were disliked by the "hardcore" MCS fans and thought they were going in the wrong direction, but it is what he needed and those songs expressed many of the changes and emotions he was going through as well as the first time he had been completly sober for an album.

Also those who dislike this song or any other on the upcoming album I would like to say, stop being so selfish. These songs are not meant to appease you, although you b$&ch about them going mainstream when all you want them to do is do what YOU see as right... But no, they are doing what they see is right for them. Song writing can be a very personal thing and as many of you know and Justin puts his heart and soul into every song he writes. If you can't appreciate that than you need to stop thinking you know anything about bands and music in general (or just go listen to your crappy music that's about the same old stuff).

The lyrics in every single song that Justin has ever been a part of are absolutly incredible. I have yet to see ANY band/singer/songwriter put as much into a song as this band does. And on a last note, to anyone who says his voice sounds like crap, you obviously know NOTHING about vocal performance and probably like previous songs/albums because the voice wasn't brought out as much. Anyone can sound good when you hid it being enough instrumentals. This is Justins voice, love it or hate it, he is VERY unique and gifted at what he does.

Of course it SOUNDS like them... idiots. They always have a slower song with a different sound! On every album they have! They are still amazing and as fresh as ever. I love MCS. They better make a tour date for Spokane, WA!

I happen to love how many of the comments "hate" on how their sound has changed. The thing is, that a band is always going to change, little by little, over every album they produce. It's only natural that their sound is going to evolve.
All this about them going mainstream... so what? They are awesome people and they make awesome music they deserve to become more popular.

The success of MCS allows them to experiment with different sound, the synth was deffinently how i destinguished MCS from other bands but its not like its totaly done away with. They probably like it just as much as their fans. They had a great sound and still do even with EITKM and i agree that if a band changes labels, or agents their music is inevidebly going to go in a slightly different direction. I still love them. Motion City Soundtracks first albums were awsome, but their still young and have a long way to go. Im seeing them in Febuary and there going to be awsome.

i agree with you. the lack of synth is different. the comparisons to IATM lean more lyrical, but IATM was all synth. this is a new band, for better or for worse. the major label may hurt the diehard MCS fans, such as ourselves, but maybe broaden their overall popularity.

So I started listening and I was like...
I don't understand, who is this singing to me? Sounded completely different from any MCS I've ever heard.
But then I got into the chorus, and following that it only got better.
The end sounded more like the old Justin.

I like it.

This song is very powerful and I really enjoyed listening to it. I like the progress MCS has made over the years and have been a fan since they first started. I like when bands experiment with different sounds and try to improve, that's what bands do. I don't really respect people that complain that a band has changed too much. Instead of comparing their new songs to their older songs try to enjoy the experience of something new. I liked "Disappear" as well, both songs are amazing and I can't wait for the release of the new album. Good work MCS!

So I've commented before, but I can't help throw in a few more words now that other people are finally starting to agree with my point of view.
Over the past few weeks I've been listening to a lot of I Am The Movie, and the more I think about it, the more I realize that they aren't really returning to their roots at all.
Where are the pulse-pounding synth lines? The rip-roaring guitar riffs? The in your face errant emotion? Where are all these things that made MCS the band we've come to know and love?
At least in Commit This To Memory, Hoppus kept a good amount of their spark alive. But what has he done to them now? Stripped them of everything that made them unique and shoved them headfirst into the mainstream.
My advice to my favorite band: ditch your producers. I Am The Movie was more or less self-produced and sounded absolutely fantastic! Return to what makes you guys so great. Because these songs are just disappointing...

I've seriously listened to this song over and over for the last two hours! I love how it kind of revisists Commit This To Memory in such a positive way. Each of the previous albums have been amazing, but CTTM is my favourite album of all time - it's great that they got Mark Hoppus back onboard for this one... Really hope I'll be able to see them at Soundwave (otherwise a show in Auckland would be good!). Can't wait for the rest of the album

this is not the motion city soundtrack i've loved for the past five years..justin's been taking voice lessons and none of the fans seem to recognize him-so sad...his voice was always one of my favorite things about this band. also, is it just me or are the synth lines are unnoticeable?

all i can say is that i'm happy they didn't censor this CD...it seems more raw than Even if it Kills Me...more like I am the Movie....but no Commit This to Memory.

I miss you MCS..please tell me the rest of this album is spectacular? No more hackneyed, moth-eaten tunes? no more conformity? where is the undisciplined, soul-penatrating mess of music that is Motion City Soundtrack?

This song and the other single 'Disappear' are really going back to the beat of the nostalgic record 'I am the Movie'. But unlikely of that, the lyrics of this song are remotely dissapointing. It's not figuratively ofcourse. I loved the way that Justin discribed in a so other way to tell his story. That was so fascinating. I hope that the rest of the album has more stories a lá I am the Movie and Commit This to Memory. Can't wait to hear more of My Dinosaur Life. I'll have it whatever it costs.

Even If It Kills Me.

This sound is sooo beautifull!
I think I'm gonna listen this song for the rest of my life!

Okay, now the truth sets in.
What a piece of ****! I only like the bridge and part of the chorus!
Please try keeping the voice like it used to be not that crappy sound in the beginning. Cause if you only have to sing like this to get a record deal. Well, where do I sign in!

Yeah I'm a fan

I have to agree with this. This song and their previous one released from their new album are missing vital synth parts- these additions are what made me enjoy Motion City in the first place. We need more "I am the Movie" and less "Even if it Kills Me"

Hmm, this may just be my opinion, but the new song sounds like a couple things:

- MCS is trying to be something they're not. Or at least, something they were not.
- Old MCS mixed with a heavy influence of Jimmy Eat World and a slight influence of Blink 182 (the Blink influence isn't a bad thing IMO, but this just goes to show how they've strayed from what made them unique)

The only things that make this song unique, really, are the lyrics (which are good as ever) along with the MCS trademark of repeating some part of the lyrics to emphasize upon them ("I'll stall before I start"), and MAYBE some of the repeated chord progressions. Ish. Everything else about it sounds very generic to me, and it makes me sad that you can hardly hear any of their classic synth goodness.

Perhaps this is just a more experimental song from this album, and as for myself, I'm hoping the rest of the album doesn't take much after this song, 'cuz this is something I'll get sick of listening to pretty quickly. In contrast, I first heard CTTM more than three years ago, and I still thoroughly enjoy it! Keep it up, MCS. You'll get there, I have faith.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its not as great as i am the movie, needs the instruments to be stronger and justin is kinda overpowering everyone else vocally, but its ok... im SUPER excited!!! Jesse needs to add more synth, Matt needs to turn up the bass, Justin and Josh need to add more variety to the guitars, and the Tony's drumming is unusually quiet... MY DINOSAUR LIFE! even though i expect it to be a disappoint, i NEED the CD!!!!!

I cant WAIT to buy this album!!
ARG
Justin's lyrics never cease to amaze me with how personal and honest they are, plus the crazy background noise in this track is killer.
It's his little life story, and I need to hear it,
In short: "fkjfcjhgfdcvbnhgfxcvbnjhgfcvbnhg" Thats the only way I can express my excitement at the minute.
Super stoked man, weeee!

:'( These are tears of sadness not joy. I was afraid of this happening, Motion City Soundtrack has lost its edge. First off, who in the hell is singing because that is not the Justin I know. What are with the lyrics? Motion has never been so straight forward, but instead used clver metaphors to express the story each in song. Hopefully this is the only song like this, otherwise I may regret purchasing the $60 special edition Motion City Soundtrack cd package. This is all just my opinion, but if Motion continues down the path of mainstreamness they are slowly headed for, it may be time to find a new favorite band.

MCS is a band ahead of its time, being held back by an untalented and unimaginative producer. I remember seeing MCS when they were touring with All American Rejects before the launch of I Am the Movie. That albumn never left my cd player for 2 years. But each iteration of MCS that had followed has been progress, no doubt. When they got around to making Even if it Kills Me, they had finally found a producer who understood where they had come from, and where they were heading; a producer who understood MCS, and all of their potential.

I am severely dissapointed with the lack of production quality on both of their newly released songs. MCS deserves better than Mark Hoppus.

I'm not sure what to think. I would say this is no better than Even If It Kills Me songs, and much worse than Commit to the Memory. And how come he changed the way he sang? It was just perfect what he did on the previous records. May the rest of the album be any better than this one and Disappear.
