EXCLUSIVE: Greg Dulli Sings with The Mighty Fine

Greg Dulli is quite the collaborator, lending his talents to friends across the musical spectrum, as on the fantastic slate of Beatles covers he did with Dave Grohl, Thurston Moore, and others for 1994’s Backbeat, and inviting guests into his fold, like Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan on their Gutter Twins project. Now, he’s lending a hand to Steve Myers, a former backup singer for Dulli’s breakthrough band, the Afghan Whigs, who’s now fronting his own band, the Mighty Fine. Hear their collaboration, “Ready to Roar,” here.

“I met Greg on a balmy NOLA night back in the ’90s and we’ve been brothers ever since, bonding on good music, nightlife, and Southern girls,” says Myers. “He saw something in me I didn’t know I had and the next thing I know I’m recording with my favorite band and touring the world as an Afghan Whigs backup singer. Touring with the Whigs on the tour for [their album] 1965 was like going to rock’n’roll grad school.”

“Steve Myers is one of my favorite people on the planet and the Mighty Fine are a truly kickin’ rock’n’roll band,” Dulli tells SPIN. “When he asked me to do the song, I said, ‘Let’s go.’ We did it in an hour or so and then went dancing somewhere. I think the song came out great.”

The Brooklyn-based garage soul quintet also roped in the horn section from NYC ska legends the Slackers — sax man Dave Hillyard and trombonist Glen Pine — to lay down their own flavor on “Ready to Roar.”

The song comes from the Mighty Fine’s upcoming full-length, Get Up to Get Down, due later this summer. Check out more info on the band via Facebook.
