Watch Eleanor Friedberger’s Wondrous ‘When I Knew’ Video

eleanor friedberger, personal record, when i knew

Eleanor Friedberger has always had a knack for eccentricity. Whether she’s diving deep into a melody-warping rabbit hole with her brother Matthew as the Fiery Furnaces or crafting an infectiously fidgety solo album, the Illinois native specializes in enthusiastically oddball thought-pop. Enter the just-released video for “When I Knew,” a brisk, sun-spotted jaunt from her recently released Personal Record. Directed by Ryan Junell, the clip follows the lady Friedberger as she goes about seemingly normal activities: Doing the laundry, fixing a light in the basement, enjoying some fresh air outdoors. But, like the individual songs of Personal Record, the video feels part of a heightened reality, thanks to some flashes of rainbow color and swooshing visual effects. It’s as if all the details of the everyday are imbued with just enough magic to make them worth marveling at. Watch it above, and find tour dates below.
