Earl Sweatshirt’s upcoming Doris LP arrives August 20, and in advance of that fast-approaching date, the Odd Future MC has shared the video for album cut “Hive.” Directed by Hiro Murai (who also helmed the clip for the confessional “Chum”), the shadowy short trades in Mischief Night menace, as a group of dudes in creepy Halloween masks prowl deserted suburban streets on their bicycles, trolling past a pair of lusty canines.
Earl’s joined by Vince Staples and Casey Veggies, both of whom contributed to the moody track. Staples’ verse injects the small-town terror vibes with some heavy subject matter vis-à-vis a reference to the Holocaust. “Come around, we gun ’em down,” he spits. “Bodies piled / Auschwitz.” Given the current climate of nixed rapper endorsements, it’s not hard to imagine a rhyme like that causing trouble for Earl down the line.
“Hive” follows a wave of previously heard material from Doris, including “Whoa” (featuring Tyler, the Creator), “Guild” (co-starring Mac Miller), the Pharrell-produced “Burgandy,” and the aforementioned “Chum.” Pre-orders of Doris are currently available through iTunes.
