By now you have surely seen Drake's new album cover art. You know, the twin images of Drake and what appears to be a younger version of himself, each staring into the distance, set against, um, a hyper-realistic blue sky filled with puffy clouds. Look, when Nothing Was the Same comes out on September 24, the track list will have Drizzy's pick of potential year-end list candidates ("Hold On, We're Going Home," "All Me," "The Motion," and on and on). Cover artist Kadir Nelson seems like a smart, talented guy with an impressive résumé (he did the artwork for Michael Jackson's posthumous Michael and has illustrated best-selling books about heroic figures such as Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Jackie Robinson). And yes, there's precedent for some of this: Killer Mike's painted younger self on last year's R.A.P. Music, not to mention the childhood photos on Nas' Illmatic, the Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready to Die, and Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III (and IV). But c'mon: The background is the sky, just like in every picture you drew when you were that kid's age. And the pair's super-serious faces are so photo-realistic we're near uncanny valley territory. Isn't it all a bit, well, hilarious-looking? Especially compared with the equally hilarious but awesome, opulent moroseness of 2011's Take Care? And aren't we going to feel a little bit embarrassed having this looming over our turntables for the rest of 2013? Drake has to know this is funny.
