Divine Fits Cover Tom Petty and Space Out ‘Like Ice Cream’ on ‘Kimmel’

Divine Fits have plenty of original material they could play. Not just from last year’s sleek sleeper A Thing Called Divine Fits, but also from their other bands: Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs for Dan Boeckner, Spoon for his co-singer and -songwriter Britt Daniel, and, well, a whole bunch of bands for powerhouse drummer Sam Brown, most recently New Bomb Turks. And yet recently the quasi-supergroup have been playing a fascinating assortment of covers. Bruce Springsteen. Frank Ocean. The Ramones.

Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Boeckner led Divine Fits through a cover of Tom Petty’s “You Got Lucky” that kept the Heartbreakers frontman swampy rootsiness but stayed fully within Fits’ synth-pulsing, skewed-edges style. More familiar was the LP’s “Like Ice Cream,” which veers off into bewitching krautrock-like atmospherics toward the end. Daniel appeared to forget the words at one point, but when you’re Divine Fits, you can pull such miscues off with aplomb. Also check out the scorching new song they performed at South By Southwest.
