Disclosure, Nile Rodgers, and Sam Smith Get Lucky ‘Together’

Disclosure, Nile Rodgers, "Together," Sam Smith, Jimmy Napes

Let there be no doubt: Nile Rodgers’ welcome, cancer-free resurgence didn’t end with Daft Punk. The Chic founder’s previously tipped collaboration with Disclosure, the London dance duo behind this year’s Essential debut album Settle, has arrived, and it’s a gorgeously simmering bit of future-funk. With smoldering U.K. singer Sam Smith, who sang on Disclosure’s early single “Latch” and just put out a solo EP titled Nirvana, “Together” offers an ideal riposte to Rodgers, Daft Punk, and Pharrell’s Random Access memory “Get Lucky.” Where that song carries a whiff of ’70s nostalgia, this one inhabits a synth-R&B moment made up of forward-looking acts like Kelela. And where that one stayed up all night, this one lounges out like a gloriously misspent afternoon. Another “Latch” collaborator, producer Jimmy Napes, also contributes, while at the center are Rodgers’ Prince-ly guitar flickers. So happy, “Together.”
