Dev Hynes and Neneh Cherry Promote Gender Neutrality Awareness on ‘He She Me’

Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes and Neneh Cherry teamed up for a spacey new song with an admirable message. Their collaboration, “He She Me,” promotes gender neutrality awareness. The English department-store chain Selfridges commissioned the duo to write the progressive song, and Alex Turvey and Kathryn Ferguson directed the elaborate, one-take video. On the page for the video on Selfridges’ website, Ferguson explained the thinking behind the short.

The film is an evolving journey through a subtle push and pull between masculinity and femininity, captured entirely in one unbroken shot, utilising in-camera camera effects in a world populated by out-scaled physical props inspired by Faye Toogood’s in store realisation of Agender. This film has come at a time when important conversations about gender fluidity and non-binary ways of being are finally getting a lot of attention.
