Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan was rushed to the hospital Monday, just before his band's scheduled performance in Athens, Greece.

A statement from a band spokesperson says Gahan is suffering from a "severe bout of gastroenteritis," a form of stomach flu.

More than 20,000 had gathered in the Greek capital's Terra Vibe Park yesterday, paying up to 100 Euros (roughly $140) for tickets to the show. "We regret today's performance has to be canceled," a rep from City 99.5 Radio, the event's organizer, said from onstage just before the gig was scheduled to start. "David Gahan fell ill in his dressing room."

In addition to the Athens show, the band has canceled five more performances -- May 14 in Istanbul, May 16 in Bucharest, May 18 in Sofia, Bulgaria, May 20 in Belgrade, and May 21 inZagreb, Croatia. All shows will be rescheduled soon; fans are urged to hold onto their tickets.

Depeche Mode released their 12th studio album, Sounds of the Universe, in April. In a recent interview with SPIN.com, Gahan, a former drug addict who nearly died of an overdose in 1996, said the band's upcoming North American outing would be a spectacle befitting the band's ethereal music, thanks to famed photographer Anton Corbijn, who designed their stage setup. "There's going to be a lot of light and shade and mood," Gahan explained

Gahan's condition pending, Depeche Mode will kick off their North American jaunt July 24 in Toronto. They're also scheduled to headline Chicago's Lollapalooza in August.
