Ukrainian capital Kiev is in the midst of recovering from the anti-government protests that left more than 80 people dead and led President Viktor Yanukovych to flee over the weekend. Though it seems peace has returned to the city, Depeche Mode have “regretfully” pulled out of a concert scheduled for Wednesday, February 26, at the International Exhibition Center because of “current civil unrest and instability in Kiev and the whole of Ukraine.”
“The safety and security of the band, crew and fans is the highest priority, and at this time it is not possible to ensure a safe and enjoyable concert experience for everyone involved,” the group wrote on its website. “The band’s thoughts are with the Ukrainians during this challenging period and they sincerely look forward to the next time they can perform for the fans in Kiev and Ukraine.”
Depeche Mode said fans can get refunds from ticket vendors or the box office. Other acts scheduled to perform in Kiev include Sacramento prog rockers Tera Melos and Michigan metalcore outfit We Came as Romans, and as of now, both shows, scheduled for February 28 and March 4 respectively, appear to be going ahead as planned. Korn and Tori Amos are set to play Kiev this spring.
