Watch Dave Grohl’s Country Beatboxing CMAs Jaunt With Zac Brown Band

If there was a time when Nashville could gently skewer parvenus as rhinestone cowboys — “Look at them boots,” Alan Jackson once quipped — that’s long gone now in an era when Florida Georgia Line can have a country No. 1 hit with Nelly, Sheryl Crow can put out a country album that sounds pretty much like regular Sheryl Crow, and Taylor Swift can keep being, y’know, Taylor Swift.

Well, Luke Bryan-beefing product of Georgia’s Lake Oconee region Zac Brown has always been as much H.O.R.D.E. tour as Grand Ole Opry (his Band’s Clay Cook even played on then-Atlanta-based John Mayer’s Napster-era indie release). According to Hitfix‘s sources, ZBB have enlisted no less a rock statesman than Dave Grohl to produce their next album. In the meantime, the Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman sat in on jaunty new Brown song “Day for the Dead” at the Country Music Awards show last night (November 6).

The Foos have good-naturedly lampooned honky tonk in trucker hats, and Grohl recently dipped into ’70s country-rock for a web comedy episode with Jack Black and Val Kilmer. But here he could just be himself, complete with a pummeling rock’n’roll breakdown.

The biggest stylistic departure for the Sound City player, other than fiddle, might’ve been the beatboxing. Not by Grohl, don’t worry.
